CRUISE/SPEED  CONTROLS

[SWITCH SETTINGS] [ DROP OUTS]

Notes by Claude in Victoria

For any one needing to replace their OEM Cruise control, one choice is a
change to an electronic one similar to current autos. The Rostra, Ultra
II Cruise Control makes a very neat, compact and functional update to
modern standards. It is easy to move speed up or down by tapping the
control briefly or to return to a previous selected speed after a slow
down or stop.

Scott Woodward purchased his Rostra Cruise Control unit from me.  If any
one is interested in purchasing a CC System,  I have several in stock &
can make them available as requested.
The Rostra Electronic Cruise Control does away with the vacuum connection
that the OEM CC used for actuation of the accelerator.  Many features of
the modern Luxury Car CC are included with this system.  A Pulse
Generator is placed between the short speedometer cable & the Long cable
(takes the place of the OEM Sensor Unit).  Since vacuum is not used, the
Electronic CC will hold & maintain speed as the coach goes up/down the
grades (WOT if need to keep up with the set speed).
Several GMC Pacific Cruisers & GMC Classics have been using this system
for several years.  The Rostra has a 3 year factory warranty.......good
design & fabrication.

The Rostra Cruise Control System Consisting of :1)  Actuator Assembly, 2) Control Unit & 3)
Signal Generator is available at $200 + shipping.  Also included is a supplement to the installation
Instructions for the GMC Motorhome specific installation. All necessary wiring is included.

Instructions are included and Duanne adds some supplemental ones for the
GMC.,however the following will give GMC'ers an idea of proceedures.

1. All old cruise control components are removed, including transducer,
brackets, vacuum hosing and off switch at brake pedal. This frees up
some room at the rear of the motor around the distributor and makes for
a cleaner and neater appearing motor.

2. Short speedo. cable from trans. is curved left of motor well and
screwed into pulse generator. The longer cable is scewed into the other
side of Pulse Gen. and routed in an easy arc up to the speedometer.

3.The Actuator is mounted on a bracket in the engine area to one of the
bolts for the drivers seat base.

4. A small cable from Actuator is routed beside the accelerator cable &
hooked to the same spot as the chain for the OEM cruise control

5. End of the turn signal is cut off and a new control is slid on and
held in place with two small allen screws.Mount it so lever can be seen
from driving position.

6. Electronically via wiring harness unit is connected to + power behind
glove box and at brake pedal and grounded along the aluminum frame of
the motor well.

To locate  dealers one can go to web site <www.rostra.com>,however, I purchased mine through Duane Simmons, and he  and Richard have more info on Genes site.

Another number was given on the Net for one of the components however to my knowledge it is the same unit, however different distributors may have a different number. It would be wise to double check this.

The Rostra Technicians  have stated that the Electronic Cruise Control Installation instruction for connecting the BLUE wire to the Distributor Tack is WRONG for our application & should be disconnected & connected to chassis ground (Blue wire to ground).  This will improve performance at the top of the climb & minimize "drop out" activity on the "Flats".  This pertains to Rostra's Electronic Cruise Control P/N 250-1223.Duane Simmons

My switches are set at and I believe correctly:
1-off, 2-on, 3-off,  4-off, 5-off, 6-off, 7-on, 8-off, 9-on, 10-off.

12 POSITION SWITCH

The Rostra Cruise Control Company recently changed their All Electric Cruise Control from a 10 position Programming Switch configuration (DIP Switch) to a 12 Position Programming Switch configuration w/o an assembly part number change.  So if you recently, within the last 6 month, purchased & installed a Rostra Ultra II/World Cruise Control, it may be
helpful to verify that the optimum  program switch setting is accomplished.  Rostra's installation manual goes in great detail about & it is clear as to which setting to use for the GMC configuration except for the "Engine/SetUp Timer" Program switch 7, 8 & 9.  After several discussion with Rostra's Technical Service Dept., it appears that these switches should be set in the off position (7, 8 & 9 OFF) for best performance.  The "Engine/SetUp Timer" function is pertaining to "Engagement Response Time".  Rostra recommends that this
function be set for LOW (8 Cylinder Low.......Sw 7, 8 & 9 OFF) initially for best performance.  However, if the engagement action is sluggish, then & only then the function should be change to the HIGH position (7 & 8 OFF, 9 ON).

The Programming switches are located under the rectangular shaped rubber grommet on top of the Cruise Control Actuator Module (Black Box).  It may be desirable to verify which switch configuration that you have & if it is the 12 switch configuration, then verify that Switch 7, 8 & 9 are OFF as recommended by the Rostra's Technical Dept.  You can contact  Rostra's Technical Dept. directly by phone 1-800-782-3379 for clarification/additional information. Note:  Use of a small mirror & light may be desirable to observe the switches w/o moving the Black Box.

Cruse Control Drop outs

FYI
Some of you that have a modern CC such as the All Electric Rostra Unit should be aware that the CC uses the filament in the stop Lites to
connect to a chassis ground.  This is a safety feature so that the CC is not allowed to operate or be turned on if the Brake Lite switch activates
the stop lites.  Upon installation of LED type brake lites, the connection to chassis ground is no longer available thru the LED (no filament element).  Therefore, if you install LED type Brake Lites & have a Rostra CC, the CC will not activate since the Brake Lite filament ground connection will not exist.  But there is better to connect the All Electric Rostra CC such that the Brake Lite is not in the circuit. Remove the Violet wire from the cold side of the Brake Switch & connect it to ground thru  the Original CC Electric Dump switch (normally closed switch & is located on the top end of the brake switch with a Pink & a Brown wire connection).   Cut the Pink & Brown wire from the Dump Switch.  Connect the end of one of the Dump switch wires to a good chassis ground & connect the Violet wire to the other Dump Switch wire.  That is all there is to it & everyone that has an All Electric CC should consider use of the Dump Switch in lieu of the Cold Side of the Brake Lite switch as stated in the CC installation book.  This modification will minimize the CC drop outs that occur when the turn signal is activated.  duane
