ALTERNATOR BELT INSTALL
It is NOT necessary to remove or even loosen the other belts to get the
alternator belt on.
Loop it over the fan and feed it between the other belts in the v- groove
at the bottom of the pulley system You can put a breaker bar on the crank
pulley to turn it over and feed the alt belt through or you can bump it
with the key but make sure it doesn't start...just turn over 1/8 rotation.
Feed it under the pulleys until the new alt belt is on the inside of the
other belts(close to the engine block). Then put it in position and adjust
the alt belt tension.
I've done it  a 100 times on mine and others...If I ever get to another GMC
rally, Maybe I can do a demo but don't be late, it only takes about 10
minutes total !Mike in NS

Take a 10 mm open wrench with you when you buy the belts.  If the wrench will fit over the belt IT IS THE WRONG ONE. (Burton)

ENGINE BELTS

   Dayco belts are gm approved.
The correct Dayco Belts are;
403 and 455-Altenator-15570
403 - P.S. - 15450
403 -  A.C. - 15234

4 kinds of belts, The top one is the standard Napa or Gates belt style. This would be the 7425.

The 2nd one down is the Dayco Belt, Top Cog# 15570. Notice the extra fabric belts throughout the Dayco.

The 3rd and forth are used, a NAPA/Gates 7000 seriesand then a Gates 5000 series belt.

The 5000  belt is as good as a Dayco, but Gates won't give me the correct sizes. They insist their 7000 series is good enough.

The top is the Gates 7000 series belt after 3-4 months. Stretch, slip then burn. The bottom is a NAPA Belt after several years. This belt is still good because it doesn't
stretch. It doesn't stretch because of the extra fabric belts throughout it's construction

The top NAPA belts isn't strong enough, the bottom is. These are not GMC Belts,(check nums).

Typical Gates/NAPA belt on a 100 amp altenator. These 100ampers need full fabric belts. See 1st photo for belt numbers.

The belts are available at most autoparts places:

AC Belt      GM-9433670, Dayco 15605, NAPA 25-14983
Alternator   GM-405600 , Dayco 15570, NAPA 25-14483
power steer  GM-9433640, Dayco 15440, NAPA 25-11303

And you can cross these belts at a PEP boys or an Auto Zone.J.R. Wright

ENGINE BELTS

The belts are available at most autoparts places.  We should be using 11mm belts.  Gates Co. has discontinued their 11 mm belt product line and has substitured a 9.5 MM product line which is too narrow.

I measured them with a 10 mm wrench and 11mm wrench.   The 10 mm did not fit and the 11 did. (Phil Swanson technique) This means  they all passed the 11mm (7/16") test.    The packages all said 11mm wide on them.

I checked both Kelly-Springfield and Goodyear.  The story is exactly the same on both brands.  If fact they use exactly the same part numbering system.  This makes sense sinse since they are both owned by Goodyear.  If you get a belt in either K-S or Goodyear that starts in 15, it is a 11mm wide belt.  If you get a belt belt that starts in 17 it is a 13mm belt.  The digits following the 15 are the length in milimeters.
*********************

The first two digits (15) are the width series, and they should be7/16" belts (11mm). I have found many, however, that are labeled 15and are only 3/8" (10mm) wide, including Daycos.

The last three numbers are the length of the belt, in inches. Our belts are therefore 45.2, 57.2, and 62.0 inches long.

Kelly-Springfield belts are sized in metric. The "15" is the same, but the last three numbers are in meters.

If you ask for dimensions and measure the width to make sure it's7/16" or 11mm, then you'll get what you need. Rick (6/9/06)

*  The 3/8" UNDESIRABLE belts are really 9.5mm wide and usually state 9.5mm on the package even though the part numbers may match a 7/16 belt.  This is why you take a 10mm wrench open end to see if it will fit over the belt easily.  The two biggest offenders of this part number / size mismatch are Gates and NAPA. kenB

After a LOT of looking I found a parts supplier that carries the full line. They charge $5.00 flat ups fee, and the belts I got are:
Goodyear 15466, 15574, 15621. I have 75 PB with 455.
The phone # is: 408-988-2660, 2290 De La Cruz Blvd., Santa Clara, CA

______________
I found on my 455 air cond. belt that I needed the slightly shorter belt to
get more tension. Someone also posted that Gates have a lifetime warranty.Emery Stora
