SPECTRUM 2000

Winnebago tried to emulate the
appearance of the GMC
(out of production now)

I saw the Winnebago Spectrum 2000 models when they first were produced at Forest City. We were there in 1988 or1989 and felt at home with our Birchaven due to the presence of the then Advanced Rear engined Spectrum. It looked just like a GMC except for the rear engine cooling vents. Our GMC was painted Silver and Charcol Silver, while parked in the Visitor Center many approached us thinking ours was a '23 foot mini version. Spectrum was 32 foot. Winnebago lost interest in this Ford 460ci rear engined GMC lookalike and recalled all produced . They were later sold by I think LazyDaze RV, only about 96 were produced, they were done in by Cooling and Brake problems.   (Mark)

NEWS FLASH   The Spectrum is still alive, being reincarnated by Don Hearin`s Special Interest Vehicles. They are replacing the engine with a Ford Triton V-10. You should see the beautiful and graphical paint jobs they are getting.   (Paul Bartz)

John Howell went down to El Dorado, Arkansas last week (June 10, 2005) and bought a Spectrum 2000, so here are the pictures of it setting in his future shop area. Despite the many rumors that they all burnt up, were destoyed and etc, there are still a good number of them out there ! Also the orignal Spectrum 2000 Motorhome Club is still in existance chartered under FMCA . The one we got has the orignal Ford 460 engine, has about 17,000 miles on it and with the engine being in the rear it is so quiet going down the road you really have to watch your speed, you think you are doing 50mph and you look down at the speedometer and you are doing 75 while towing a Saturn !  I have never been that fast in our GMC. So far we are tickled to death to have been able to get such a fine example of the Spectrum 2000 and in my favorite color of blue. I hope to be able to piece together the true story on the Spectrum 2000 and I am making good progress on that also, it is an amazing story in it`s self !

Here's some photos of John's "new" Spectrum
